Happy Birthday Dad ………….. Day 11 of 100

Today is my Dad’s 94th birthday and, yesterday, I travelled down from Yorkshire to celebrate his special day.

My Dad lives 250 miles away, in rural Hampshire and I don’t see nearly enough of him. Although I phone twice a week for a chat, its definitely not the same as being able to give him a hug and kiss, in person, every day.

Dear Dad is suffering from terminal bowel cancer and ……. lets be perfectly frank…..he is unlikely to see his 95th birthday.  So it was doubly important to be there this year.

Though his body is ill, his mind is sharp and he still enjoys the finer things in life.  he loves to socialise and especially likes to eat out.  So, my sister Wendy, who is his official carer, booked us into a local pub restaurant for a birthday lunch.

Dad doesn’t have much of an appetite, but the staff at  ‘The Hinton Arms’  at Cheriton, know him well and very kindly prepare a smaller meal,  to his specifications …….

I’m not used to eating a large lunch and the comprehensive menu included such things as enormous steaks; various casseroles, curries, rabbit pie, chicken cooked in a variety of ways and even a brace of partridge.

I chose  fish and chips because I thought it would be fairly small and simple.  This is what arrived ………

Yes ….it was literally hanging over the edges of the huge oval platter……….

Needless to say, I couldn’t finish it…….but it was absolutely delicious.

After we had all stuffed ourselves silly, we drove back to Dad’s bungalow, where the  ‘birthday boy’ had a restorative snooze before sampling some cake.

Happy birthday Dad…… you are a very special, well-loved guy ….I hope you had a lovely day.

I am still struggling with the poor broadband and WiFi signals…..so this will probably have to be published when I return to Yorkshire. Sorry.
