I do like this little village. I have lived all over England and spent 15 years in Scotland so I think I am well qualified to comment on the pros and cons of various locations.
Skidby sits in a little dip, high on the top of the Yorkshire Wolds, presided over by a magnificent, fully working windmill.
Its a small village, with only one pub …..which also houses a tiny shop. There are a couple of churches; a thriving Village Hall, a little Primary School …..and that’s it.
Just houses, surrounded by glorious country-side. It is a walker’s and cyclist’s paradise…..being mostly flat up here on the Wolds.
But one of the things I love about this village is the trust. People leave their keys with neighbours ……. folk are honest …..doors do not always have to be locked. Its all a bit ‘old-fashioned’ ….like a 1950s film.
In the summer, buckets of flowers are left by gates and you just put money in a plate.
And, if you want delicious, truly-free-range-eggs, you go to this delightful little ‘hut’.
And you just pop your money in the ‘Honesty Box’ !!!
Okay, some of the people are a bit ‘twin-set and tweeds’ …..its is definitely a middle-class environment.
But………. its not too snobby………
There is a picture-perfect, chocolate-box-gorgeous village a couple of miles away that is so far up its own back-side that residents are not permitted to hang out any washing, unless it is well-screened and not visible to the general public. They think that the sight of clothes, flapping in the breeze or drying in the sunlight, is indescribably ‘common’ !!!
I can’t imagine living anywhere like that, however beautiful the gardens or picturesque the homes.
I am content where I am ……..so I will finish this blog entry and go and buy some eggs………and maybe hang out some washing …………….
